Their Eyes Were Watching God is Zora Neale Hurston's best-known work. Set in Florida in the early twentieth century, this novel follows main character Janie Crawford's journey from adolescence into middle age. She navigates stifling marriages and, eventually, an epic romance marked both by beauty and cruelty. Out of print for nearly thirty years, due in large part to a rejection of the novel's strong black female protagonist, this classic has reached high acclaim since it was reissued in 1978.
