July Featured Coffee: Congolese SOPACDI

This month's featured coffee is SOPACDI, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a cooperative one of our roasters visited last month.

Fair Trade - Organic - Washed
Lake Kivu, DR Congo

Solidarite Paysanne la Promotion de Actions Café et Development Integras, known as SOPACDI, formed in 2002 in response to the ethnic and gender-based violence plaguing Kivu, where SOPACDI’s 5,200 members live. The history of conflict in the region has made many of the coop’s female members widows. SOPACDI has responded to inequality faced by it’s female members by offering a 2-cent premium per pound for any coffee grown by a woman.

One of Thread's roaster just visited SOPACDI last month, along with a team of other roasters, importers, and baristas from around the country as part of the Saveur du Kivu, the first ever specialty coffee cupping competition in the Eastern DR Congo.  SOPACDI's coffee was the 3rd place winner. Thread is happy to bring you a coffee we'll be featuring this month that is unique and bright, with notes of macadamia, cranberry & white pepper. What's more, it also makes a delicious cold brew!
