POSITION FILLED: We're looking for a cook to join our kitchen crew!

Update: We've filled this position! We'll post other jobs on our site as they become available. Thanks for all of your interest!

Red Emma's has an immediate opening in our Food Department for an experienced vegan/vegetarian chef! Join our team of worker-owner-foodies, and help us keep the kitchen running smoothly while we work together to increase the volume and variety of our offerings.

What we're looking for:

Someone who loves food, has a good understanding of vegan and vegetarian cuisine and a stockpile of good recipes, and is willing to work long-hours to help develop, refine, and roll out an expanded menu over the course of the next few months! Professional experience in a commercial kitchen is not required, but is helpful. A solid understanding of veganism and other common dietary restrictions (gluten allergies, etc.) is a must. Our ideal candidate is someone who's excited about making a long-term commitment to developing the Red Emma's restaurant, and who's capable of (and excited about) working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with a team of other like-minded folks.

Women, people of color, queer folks, transgender folks, and people from other traditionally marginalized communities are especially encouraged to apply.

Job responsibilities include:

Prep work (slicing, dicing, sauces, spreads)

Line cooking (soups, entrees, sides)

Occasional work on the cafe line (sandwiches, salads)

Menu development

Stock management (ordering, supply chain development)

Customer relations

At Red Emma's, everyone in the food department shares the responsibilities of keeping the business running - cooks wash dishes, clean the kitchen, and restock the shelves along with everyone else. We work long hours, spend a lot of time on our feet, and a lot of time sampling excellent food! We're looking for someone who's excited about being a part of our kitchen team, and helping to grow the business.

Hours, wages, and beyond:

We're looking for someone who is minimally available 20 hours per week, starting in early May, and able to scale up to a minimum of 30 hours per week in June. As many as 40 hours per week may be available. Evening and weekend availability is a requirement, but we'll work with you to find a schedule that works for you, and for us.

At Red Emma's, all workers currently make a living wage of $11/hour.

This position is for a permanent worker-owner of the business; getting hired means you are on track to become a member and co-owner of the worker cooperative, and will be expected to participate in our monthly full collective operational meetings, our quarterly full collective financial meetings, as well as twice-monthly department meetings.  At the successful end of a six month process, you will be a full member of the cooperative and an equal co-owner of the business.

How to apply:

Email a letter of interest and a resume (or recent work history) to foodjob@redemmas.org by April 25. Tell us why you're interested in being a worker-owner at Red Emma's, and why we should consider you as a good candidate for our kitchen team. Also tell us what you'd do to help expand our menu: are there particular dishes or types of cuisines you'd like to see us add? Certain foods you're particularly skilled at preparing? Particular flavor combinations you think we should try?

Our top candidates will be interviewed the week of April 28.
