Three Red Emma's sponsored reading groups

Not one, not two, but three reading groups starting soon from Red Emma's at the brand new Baltimore Free School, relaunched in its new home inside our space at 30 W. North Ave.  Follow the links below for more info or to sign up!

TEACHER READING GROUP

Starts Tuesday, January 7th

Open to anyone interested in public education, and anyone who teaches or educates in any capacity. We will read Diane Ravitch's new book Reign of Error: The Hoax of the Privitization Movement and the Danger to America's Public Schools>.

CRITICAL THEORY READING GROUP

Starts Wednesday, January 15th

A reading group for textual encounters between cultural studies,  philosophy,  political economy and sociology. We'll start with Slavoj Zizek and move on to Gramsci, Butler, (Selma and CLR) James, and various representatives of the Frankfurt School - among others. No prior background needed, but regular reading and discussion participation will be expected.

HOW TO TAKE OVER YOUR CITY

Starts Thursday, February 6th

This reading group will examine examples of how community activists and labor organizers in four cities have developed successful (and very different!) models in order to build sufficient power at the municipal level to advance an agenda for economic and racial justice. We will examine how grassroots power led to (potentially) transformative electoral victories in New York City and Jackson, Mississippi, as well as examining how powerful challenges to neoliberal education policy and economic development have developed in Chicago and Los Angeles, respectively.
