RED EMMAS IS HIRING A NEW WORKER-OWNER for the first time in two years!! Calling all cooks: we're looking to add one member to our kitchen team, email hiring@redemmas.org with a resume and a note about why you want to work for Red Emma's by 8/12.
We're looking for someone who is passionate about food - not just cooking and eating food, but the social, political, and cultural aspects of food too. Experience with cooking for large groups, or working in busy foodservice environments, especially commercial kitchens, is key. Our kitchen team is small, and we all fill a variety of roles, prepping, making orders, and cleaning & organizing our kitchen throughout our shifts. We handle a lot of volume with a small team, so the ability to stand for long periods of time, and to move and think quickly in a sometimes stressful environment is necessary for this position. We love intellectuals, and will happily geek out with you about revolutionary theory, but this is a kitchen job, and not a bookstore job, so please only apply if you are genuinely excited about food preparation. We're seeking someone who is psyched to cook and learn about restaurant ownership, and who will be a structural part of our kitchen as we wind down in our Mount Vernon location and gear up in our Waverly location. Ability to work some nights and weekends is a must.
Red Emma's is a worker-owned cooperative that operates a self-managed workplace. This is an ownership track position, and will involve (paid) meetings and back-end work, and all the joys and sorrows of small business ownership! We appreciate and welcome all applications, but especially encourage BIPOC and immigrant cooks to apply. Prior cooperative experience is not required, but excellent communication skills and patience for collective processes are necessary.
You can attend meetings on Mondays
You have an enthusiastic interest in coffee, and are excited about our all vegan and vegetarian menu
You are committed to the project of building an inclusive, welcoming space on North Avenue, and committed to strengthening a multiracial, anti-patriarchal, and queer/trans friendly democratic workplace
You have excellent customer service skills, and love to talk to all sorts of people
You are punctual, reliable, and contactable and responsive via text, email, and other online communication platforms
You can lift moderately heavy boxes, heavy bins of dishes, climb ladders to reach things on high shelves, and perform moderately intensive cleaning tasks like vacuuming and mopping floors.
Have you ever thought about owning your own restaurant? Are you excited about sourcing ingredients, developing recipes, and costing out food? Want to work with a team of highly skilled food-geeks who love to cook? Love crafting high-quality sandwiches & salads? Then you might be just what we're looking for!
We're looking to add a new member to our team of cooks. Commercial kitchen experience is preferred, some familiarity with vegan/vegetarian cuisine is helpful. All cooks work collaboratively to manage our kitchen, build the menu, staff the stations, and produce high-quality, ethically-sourced, affordable food every day!
We're looking for someone with a strong sense of community, who has a passion for food and social change. All Red Emma's jobs start at $11/hour, with predictable raises based on cumulative hours worked. This is a part to full time worker-owner track job, which means we are looking for someone ready to make a multi-year commitment to growing a democratically self-managed worker cooperative and radical political project, and excited about growing into a role as an equal owner of the business.
Sound great? Send us an application! Email foodjob@redemmas.org with your resume and a letter about why you want to work at Red Emma’s. Be sure to tell us how your cooking & community skills will complement our existing project!

Hey friends, Red Emma's will open at 10:30 am today, in order to let things thaw out a but before we trek over to the store! But please come in for lunch!!
For some reason, we always want to roast things in the winter. Like vegan marshmallows, and vegetables. This week, we were standing in the kitchen looking at the produce we have in stock, and we couldn't resist the urge to start grabbing delicious veggies from the fridge and roasting them up ... we first thought, "Maybe a sandwich?" But then it was so gross outside that all we could think about was a big bowl of steamy hot soup, and the recipe for our Roasted Vegetable Soup was born.
Perfect for a cold winter day - our home-made vegan split-pea soup is delicious and nutritious. As always, served with house-made bagel chips. $3 for a cup, $5 for a bowl.
We're working on scaling up our menu now that we're settled in our new space, so expect lots of new specials popping up in January! Our first addition: Spinach Salad - organic baby spinach, with a sprinkling of red cabbage, grated carrot, and and radish sprouts, topped with housemade croutons and ... shiitake bacon. Yeah, I said it: shiitake bacon, and yes, it does taste like bacon. The recipe is thanks to our fabulous chef Lanie Thomas and we can't stop eating it! Come in and get a salad soon ...
